Carroll To Lead Assault On The French

Andy Carroll is apparently in line to make his England debut tonight against France in a match that is already been described as “really unimportant and a waste of everyone’s time”.

The friendly, being played at Wembley, already has a large number of absentees including Rooney and Cashley Cole, so there are a couple of new faces in the squad this time round. Most surprising of them all was Jay Boothroyd, the Cardiff striker who was once at Arsenal but was let go by Wenger.

Keiron Gibbs and Jordan Henderson are another couple of newbies who will be subjected to a barrage of abuse from England fans after a poor performance and a loss against the French. France, of course, had an even worse World Cup than England did and Laurent Blanc has a difficult job of rebuilding the battered image of his side. Banning Sulky Anelka was a good start though!

TV viewers can catch the match on ITV up until the point that they tear their ears off and poke sharp things in their eyes so that they don’t have to listen to Andy Townsend, Adrian Chiles and Clive Tyldesley. Alternatively, turn the volume down and listen to Radio 5’s commentary instead!
