Or more accurately, “England Just About Make It”.
They may have made it into the last 16 of the World Cup but there still need to be improvements if we are to overcome a resilient German side in Bloemfontein on Sunday afternoon.
A 1-0 win was enough to see them through, but Team USA’s 92nd minute winner against Algeria meant we finished second in the group and faced the winners of Group D who turned out to be Germany, after they beat Ghana 1-0 in Jo’burg.
The team’s performance was a lot better than the previous two games as they went about looking to get the win needed to put them through and after Defoe scored the opener we all hoped that they’d go on and win comfortably. But as is the England way, they were unable to finish their opponents off and had to endure a nervy last 20 minutes as Slovenia pressed forward looking to equalise as we tried to defend a 1-0 lead.
Rooney hit the post, Defoe missed a chance and had one ruled out for offside, Terry saw a header saved well by Handanovic in the Slovenian goal who had also saved a Gerrard shot in the first half (although Gerrard should have smashed the ball instead of trying to guide it into the corner) as England pressed for a second goal that never came.
At the other end, Upson make a great tackle to deny Matavz and Terry did a brilliant impression of a swan, as he tried to block a shot by Dedic as the England goal came under attack.
The Germans will be a much tougher test and England will need to raise their game yet again if they are to get knocked out in the quarter finals again, this time by Argentina, who face Mexico in the second round.
In the other games already decided in the next round, Argentina will play Mexico, Urugua take on South Korea and Team USA face Ghana.
